Test of Security Software places
Internet-Manager in front

IT manager in foreign ministry favors server solution by Nutzwerk

The IT strategy manager in the foreign ministry in Berlin, Dr Rolf Schuster, has tested access and security solutions for use at federal authorities. Apart from solutions for Windows and LINUX also the Internet-Manager by Nutzwerk was included in the test by means of the Live-CD. "I struggled all weekend with Windows and Suse Linux 7.3. The Internet-Manager was different – using the Live-CD I was able to test it without installation on the hard disk. There is no easier and more cost-efficient security solution for a network", Dr Schuster describes his impression during a phone conversation with Nutzwerk product manager Olaf Berliner.

The Internet-Manager software enables companies, administrative bodies, schools, and public institutions to set up internet access for up to 200 workstations without profound computer knowledge and at a low cost. After installation on the server, it provides numerous functions like eMail management, firewall, filters, and router functionality. Internet-Manager costs 230 euros and offers the greatest possible internet security.

The IT strategist was convinced above all by the security functionality of the solution. The entire system and the network are protected from unauthorized access from outside by firewall functions. It is defined centrally who goes when and where in the internet. This guarantees protection from questionable contents and unwanted files. A built-in eMail filter protects the system and the users from unwanted mail. Unlike a router, the software never accepts phone calls. It is impossible to access a workstation from within the internet.

"We deliberately left out the possibility for a configuration of the built-in firewall. A graphical user interface for the configuration of the firewall rules would convey an impression of simplicity that would not do justice to its complexity in the least", says Nutzwerk CEO René Holzer about the philosophy of the Internet-Manager. "As no adjustments are possible, there will be no security loopholes caused by operating errors. However, we offer technical support to experienced administrators who would like to change the preset firewall rules", continues Holzer.

In the next step federal authorities and institutions are supposed to implement Internet-Manager. "I think that Internet-Manager will also be very interesting for our embassies and branch offices. This is where we need absolute certainty that our networks are protected reliably", Dr Schuster said to Nutzwerk.

"Our product provides companies with an 'all around carefree package' for the internet. We position our security features between router functions and a complex firewall software. The difference is that the user gets a system that has already been preconfigured with security and can still be adjusted to individual requirements. There are no additional costs for new users in the form of licenses", the manager from the foreign ministry was told by Nutzwerk product manager Olaf Berliner.
