Recognition on Web servers through Cookies

A cookie contains information that a web server sends to a web browser. This information is stored locally on the computer and will be sent back to the web server when the website is revisited. Thus, the web server recognizes the visitors. Cookies are used, for example, to allow users to visit a website without re-entering login information, or to see their shopping cart in an online shop still containing the items selected in an earlier session.

Cookies are Stored and Transmitted Unnoticed

Contrary to the initial idea, cookies are often abused for commercial purposes. For example, web servers store cookies on computers, even though the user never knowingly visited the web servers in question. These cookies can then, unbeknown to the user, send information back to the web server concerning websites previously visited, or search terms entered on those websites. Thus, users are spied on and a user profile may be created according to the user's interests, which can then be used to control the banner ads displayed in the user's browser.

Traditional Measures to Protect Users from Cookies

Modern web browsers provide different options for cookie protection. Users can choose whether the browser generally accepts or blocks cookies, or if every cookie has to be accepted or blocked individually by the user. However, general blocking of cookies often prevents websites from loading properly.

SaferSurf Sets the Cookie Lifespan

As cookies are necessary in order to be able to use most websites, SaferSurf does not block cookies in general. Instead, the cookie's maximum lifespan is set to a certain time. This allows the user to surf websites without any restrictions. However, after the cookie has expired, the user can no longer be identified through the cookie data.

No Installation Efforts

Cookie Protection is part of the SaferSurf Security concept and all users have access without additional installation or modification of their settings.

Supports all Browsers

SaferSurf supports all available web browsers. SaferSurf runs with all operating systems, as it does not require installation on your computer.
